West Perry Appoints Jeffrey A. Kuhns as Next Superintendent
Jeffrey A. Kuhns has officially been appointed as the next superintendent of the West Perry School District. Mr. Kuhns currently serves as the elementary principal in the Greenwood School District, and will officially assume his duties in West Perry in January 2023.
“I have served as an educator in Perry County for my entire career, spending extensive time in the three other county schools. I am more than excited to lead West Perry,” Kuhns said. “I was impressed with the Board’s approach to the entire search, and I am already preparing my entry plan to guide me through the first few months of learning about the organization, partnering with the board, meeting the staff and community, and engaging the students.”
Mr. Kuhns grew up in Fredericktown, Pennsylvania (an hour south of Pittsburgh) and graduated from Bethlehem Center School District in 1985. He and his wife, Lisa (a first grade teacher in West Perry) are the parents of two grown children, Hattie and Olivia. Hattie holds a master’s degree from California University of Pennsylvania, and is a personal trainer and part owner of Iron Edge Sports Performance in Dillsburg. Olivia is a full time student, also at California University, and is continuing in the ‘family business’ majoring in special education.
After graduating from California University of Pennsylvania with a bachelor’s degree in Mentally Physically Handicapped education, Mr. Kuhns earned a master’s degree from Shippensburg University in Educational Administration. He also holds a principal’s certificate, a certification in special education, and a superintendent’s letter of eligibility.
Mr. Kuhns began his career as a special education teacher in the Newport School District, a position he held for seven years before spending the next eight years as an emotional support teacher with the Capital Area Intermediate Unit. Kuhns then launched his administrative career as an assistant middle school principal and assistant elementary principal in the Susquenita School District. These assignments prepared him well to serve as the elementary principal in Greenwood, a position he has held for the last 13 years.
