On November 13, a group of Journalism students and members of The Whip embarked on an exciting trip to Shippensburg University to explore its programs and campus offerings. The day was packed with engaging activities designed to give students a taste of college life and careers in media and communication.
The visit began with a meeting with an admissions counselor, who shared insights about Shippensburg's academic programs, campus life, and the application process. From there, students delved into hands-on experiences, starting with a broadcast session at SUTV, the university’s student-run television station. This allowed the group to step into the shoes of broadcasters and learn about live production.
The students then met with members of The Slate, Shippensburg’s award-winning student newspaper. They explored tools like Adobe Photoshop and cutting-edge AI technologies used in journalism and media design. At WSYC 88.1 FM, the campus radio station, they recorded liners—short promotional clips—that may soon be heard by listeners tuning in to the station.
The day wrapped up with an insightful presentation on public relations. Students learned about the importance of SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound) in creating effective corporate social media strategies.
This field trip provided an invaluable opportunity for students to gain experience in media and communications and envision themselves in future media roles.
