The West Perry High School Jazz Ensemble wrapped up a successful 2019 season with a 7th place finish and an Outstanding rating by the judges at the Tournament of Bands/Tournament Indoor Association (TIA) Atlantic Coast Regional Championships May 3-5 in Wildwood, NJ.  This was West Perry’s first trip to compete at ACC Championships.

The West Perry High School Jazz Ensemble consists of traditional big band instruments including saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and a rhythm section consisting of piano, bass, drum set and vibraphone. Repertoire includes different styles such as swing and rock. Emphasis is placed on students learning different styles of music and developing improvised solos that are made up on the spot.

The West Perry High School Jazz Ensemble also competed at the Biglerville High School TIA Jazz Competition on April 5th where they earned a “Silver” Rating.

“This year’s show included three pieces of music that challenged our students.” Said Matthew Wieseman, Band and Jazz Ensemble Instructor.  “We are a small rural school in Central Pennsylvania.  By all accounts, we shouldn’t be as successful as we are.  That is a testament to the commitment and talent of our students.  They worked hard and the results speak for themselves.  I am proud of these students both as musicians and people.”

The 2019 Jazz Ensemble is made up of 14 students.  Senior:  Morgan Hatt.  Juniors:  Brady Cully, Daniella DeLissio, Grace Horn and Quintin Morrow.  Sophomores:  Brittany Barber, Morgan DeLancey, Wren Grove, Hannah Maskulyak, Brooke Mitchell and Shannon Zeigler.  Freshmen:  Elijah Houtz and Samantha Geesaman. 8th Grader: Kelly Zeigler.
